Web 01 comes from Webs, Windows and Templates, an intertwined series of photograms exploring Mays's ongoing fascination with the tools involved in rendering space. Mays grew up with her architect father's drafting table and office at home, and she has long been fascinated with the templates and tapes used to make shapes and structures visible and invisible. The spider web photogram is made from tape, a nod to the spiders' engineering and structure-building. As a way to introduce their daily and disappearing timescale into the work, each taped web is brought into the darkroom and sequentially pulled apart after the exposure is made until the web disappears, making each print unique and unrepeatable. This limited edition poster is based on one of the resulting gelatin silver photograms with color from fabric dye, a palette inspired by sky blues.

Aspen Mays (b. 1980) was raised in Charleston, SC. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Anthropology and Spanish from The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of Photography at the California College of the Arts. She is represented by Higher Pictures in New York, and recent honors include a 2021 Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Mays was also a Fulbright Scholar in Santiago, Chile, where she spent time with astrophysicists using the world’s most advanced telescopes to look at the sky, an experience that has made a lasting impact on her work.
