Giants Cave

Giants Cave is the geological remains of a large hollow dome that rose over time from the shore of prehistoric Lake Lahontan, Nevada. Most of the dome has since collapsed but a chamber with an entrance remains.

The Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, whose ancestors have lived in the area for over 10,000 years, has an oral history that tells of giants who lived in this and other caves in the surrounding landscape.

Giants Cave once housed thousands of culturally significant Paiute-Shoshone artifacts including ancestral remains, tools, baskets, and hunting implements. The contents of the cave were long ago removed by opportunists, scientists, and others; everything including a millennium of accumulated bat guano—used in the manufacturing of gunpowder and as a source of fuel—has been scraped away.
