Salt and Dust

by Justin James King

In this harsh and seemingly lifeless landscape, the only things that thrive are a type of primitive microorganism called Archaea. They are direct ancestors of the earliest of lifeforms who reveal their presence through the brilliant colors of the salt-caked seabed.

They are called "light eaters" because they use a phototrophic process to capture and convert sunlight into chemical energy. Archaea generate an orange pigment to protect themselves from potentially damaging UV rays; thus creating unusually bright colors.

Salt and Dust contains 32 full-page photographs documenting this interesting natural phenomenon.
