There is no sign or marker. It is Mesozoic granite, formed deep within the earth and part of the proto-Sierra itself. At some point, water worked its way into the rock's joints. In this volume, Memory of Water, Justin James King and Leah Koransky focus on desert holly as a lens through which to explore the resilience of life in the arid desert. The book interweaves photographs and handmade ochre pigment washes with botanical and geological still-lifes to create a dynamic field study of a singular species. Desert holly, botanically known as Atriplex hymenelytra, is the most drought tolerant member of the saltbush family. Native to the southwestern United States, it survives in extremely arid climates by using the salt in its leaves to extract water from the soil. Its distinct silver foliage, shaped like twisted holly leaves, reflects sunlight and is shed during particularly dry periods, a common survival adaptation among desert flora. The artists drew inspiration from the Trona Pinnacles, a unique geological site in the California Desert where crumbling tufa spires rise from an ancient lakebed. It is an ethereal landscape, blanketed in a pale and clay-like dust, where—despite the palpable absence of moisture—desert holly flourishes. Its presence in this once-submerged landscape is a testament to nature's adaptability to ecological shifts and a poetic contemplation of the landscape’s memory of water. It reflects the unique land formations and ecology of Searles Valley, California. Printed with gold ink on predominantly black paper, the work formally investigates the stark chromatic and tonal contrasts shaped by the desert’s intense sunlight. It evokes a dialogue between light, shadow, and the adaptive systems that have evolved within the remnants of an extinct prehistoric lake. Gusts of wind blessed us with cool air, and we’d hold our breath as the earth’s sounds unfolded. Day turned to night, summer to fall, and the smell of tall grass, purple skies, and bug spray returned from evenings forgotten. Infinity loops like desire lines marked my mind as I coaxed sounds from worn guitars and creaky pianos. In the background, songs from jukeboxes and FM stations made their way onto long-drive CDs, then playlists of MP3s, and all of a sudden, our parents’ songs became our songs. Except when we heard them, they sounded different. They had been warped by time. Back then, the crowds seemed bigger when they’d collect and pilgrimage to the spot—all to gather ‘round the holy dirt. Everyone’s older now, and the days seem shorter. The places we used to play have given way to data centers and freeway exits. Requests for songs on the radio are met with busy signals, and I worry that the sandhill cranes seem fewer when they visit the house. Though they say pollution is making the skies dim, the stars still feel bright when we sit under them, grasping for planets and spaceships beside the family fire. I visit often and we play with the little ones. With my hands in the mud, I can feel time slowing down again. On this ground, we live and we remember. In the static of half-buried melodies, misremembered love songs, and sunbaked voicemails from family, we find that the dirt is holy. Stymied by her initial attempts to photograph fireflies' unpredictable blinking in the fading light, she decided to place captured bugs inside the body of her camera so they could crawl on and expose the film itself. Expecting that their flashing would still register as discrete points of light, she was amazed to find the resulting image looked more like a color field painting, nothing like the fleeting, temporary, seasonal strobe of the fireflies.Aspen Mays (b. 1980) was raised in Charleston, SC. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Anthropology and Spanish from The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of Photography at the California College of the Arts. She is represented by Higher Pictures in New York, and recent honors include a 2021 Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. King characterizes the region as a striking juxtaposition where avian species navigate airspace punctuated by supersonic aircraft, native flora colonize terrain marked by ordnance impact, and wildlife persists in proximity to ongoing weapons-testing and simulated warfare. The work invites broader reflection on the resilience of ecosystems subjected to anthropogenic disturbance and the species that live in and around these conflict-modified environments.
